Genki Diaries 02: Talking About Vacations

  • by

Let’s continue our Genki study of the audio dialogue found in the 2nd edition Genki 1 Workbook on pg 104.

You’ll find the Japanese transcript in the Genki Answer key book on pg 70, Chapter 11 Section W11-A

Feel free to study with me!

Summary: Ken, Akira, and Yoshiko are talking about their vacation and what they plan to do on their next vacation

けん (Ken): Akira, how was your vacation?

あきら (Akira): It was good. Everyday I went skiing in Nagano and I bathed in a hot spring in the snow, among other activities.

I’ll go to Nagano on my next vacation and I plan to climb a mountain.

けん: Yoshiko? (What did you do Yoshiko?)

よしこ (Yoshiko): I went to Australia with a friend.

あきら: What Australia?! That’s nice.

I’ve never been to Australia but my friend said they skied in Australia.

よしこ: Right now in Australia it’s summer, therefore I didn’t ski.

My friend lives in Australia that’s the reason I went there to meet them.

We walked on beach, went shopping and it was fun. (NOTE: Not sure about the “it was fun” translation)

But next trip I’ll have a part time job because I don’t have any more money.

Ken, how was your vacation?

けん: It was boring, I didn’t go anywhere.

I watched tv at home.

よしこ: I see.

けん: But next vacation I plan on doing such things with a friend like going to the mountain to camp and driving (Explanation of driving a car for pleasure is on pg 258 in the 2nd edition Genki Textbook)

Grammar That Confused Me

Grammar 1: 雪の中で

When I 1st came across this line, my brain was being literal and thought it meant inside snow I bathed

Grammar 1 Clarity: Simply means in the snow

Grammar 2: I don’t understand what is happening with this line.

ビーチを散歩して買い物したりして楽しかったです

I understand that the helping verb する in たりする changed to して to join the sentence with an い adjective but this particular structure with 2 verbs + an adjective wasn’t covered in the book.

I’m left confused and not sure about the translation of this line

Grammar 2 Clarity ?: I believe this line translates to “and it was fun”

Grammar 3: Just curious if you could you use もつ in place of ある

もうお金がありませんから

Grammar 4: Not sure of the use of the に particle after キャンプ

山にキャンプ行ったり

Grammar 4 Clarity (?): I believe it’s to show purpose of movement

Go to mountain for the purpose of camping
