Genki Diaries 09: I Need A Birthday Present

  • by

A colleague invites someone out for a drink but tonight is a busy time for the other colleague.

Let’s discover why this colleague can’t go out today

Pick up that book and let’s learn Japanese!

The exercise that goes along with the audio dialogue is in the 2nd edition Genki 1 Workbook on pg 112 Section B.

The Japanese transcript is in the Genki Answer key book on pg 72, Chapter 12 Section W12-B

女 (Woman): Takeshi, would you like to go for a drink with me tonight?

男 (Man): I’m sorry I can’t. It’s my child’s birthday today, so I have to go home early.

女: I see. Did you already buy a present?

男: No. I was busy.

女: You better buy something and return home.

男: I agree. Okay, I’ll do that.

Grammar That Confused Me

Grammar 1: The whole transcript isn’t included.

Here is the Japanese transcript「すみません。今日は子どもの誕生日なので早く帰らなきゃいけないんです。」

Grammar 2: I wasn’t familiar with this phrase そうします

Grammar 2 Clarity: Later learned that it means “I’ll do that.” “I’ll do so.”
